Green Curry Thai Laksa

There are two basic types of laksa, curry laksa and asam laksa. Curry laksa is a coconut-based curry soup while Asam laksa is sour fish based soup.

This is a version Thai version of curry laksa based on green curry. It is quite popular now in Penang and can be quite widely found. I've tasted the Thai laksa located at Swee Hong kopitiam at Pulau Tikus and also Tesco Glugor foodcourt.

Spicy, Hot, Sweet is what I used to describe this laksa dish. If you're not used to the authentic Thai cuisine, then get prepared as you will most likely end up with Rihanna's lips. Recommended to have 3 cups of ice water ready as back-up. Seriously it is damn hot.

Fresh Seafood Galore at Parkroyal's Tamarind Brasserie

If you are a seafood lover and have a huge appetite, then you shouldn't miss the opportunity to sample the Seafood Buffet Dinner at Parkroyal's Tamarind Brasserie. The range of seafood is pretty impressive with a list that includes salmon belly sashimi, fresh oysters, tiger prawns, mussels, unagi, cod fish, black-pepper fried crabs, scallops and cray fish to name a few. For those that prefer some carbs, there are chicken lasagna, pizza mozzarella, sushi, beef ribs and penang char koay teow. The hotel makes a lot of effort in attention to detail especially on food quality and also presentation. For example their fresh seafood is laid meticulously on a wooden ship placed on ice cubes with coral reefs lined up to complete the decoration.
The atmosphere is not as lively and noise-level a lot lower as compared to E&O Sarkies corner. Therefore the ambiance is very suitable for a private, romantic dinner or those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. There is a 3-stringer band playing oldies but only limited to the concourse area. So you may choose to be seated at the other areas if you prefer a quieter dining experience.
At RM108++/pax with a complimentary wine or beer, it is absolutely value-for-money for seafood lovers. There are more perks if you are a Citibank, CIMB or UOB credit card member, with discounts up to 20%.

No Plastic Bags from 2011 Onwards?

First it was Monday, then Mon-Wed and now it is permanently implemented. Kudos to Penang for being the first state in Malaysia to successfully implement the banning of plastics for all business sectors. So what is your opinion of this move? Have you gotten used to living without plastic bags? Yes it is very inconvenient and troublesome to carry your own bags. What will be the repercussions? More good than bad? Only time can tell.

Oktoberfest Penang 2010 - A Slice of Bavarian Culture Exclusively from Germany

Oktoberfest Penang 2010 brings you live entertainment exclusively from Germany with a slice of Bavarian Culture to Penang.

On Saturday, let’s celebrate, dance and have great fun with the games (e.g. arm wrestling, beer drinking or beer mug carrying contest). There will also be a lucky draw with exclusive prizes sponsored by German factories and local supporters. For sure it will be a big party with big crowds (we expect about 1600 people).

On Sunday it will be a relaxed early pint (Frühschoppen). Especially for families and relaxed people this day will be a good opportunity to celebrate the Oktoberfest in a calmer way and enjoy the Bavarian “Gemütlichkeit” in a tropical environment.

On both days you can enjoy German and local food and beer as well as the German “Reissner Band”. Of course B.Braun and Robert Bosch will set up the games stalls for children on both days, Saturday and Sunday. So it’s up to you to decide about the appropriate way to bathe in German culture!

As one of the country’s most famous events (who doesn’t want a chance to make merry, drink lots of beer and eat traditionally prepared food like (but not only) Sauerkraut (sour cabbage) with Fleischkaese (meatloaf), Schweinsbraten (roast pork) along with bayrischer Kartoffelsalat (Bavarian potato salad) or with Semmelknödel (German bread dumplings) or just Bratwuerste (grilled German sausages) with bun.

All this delicious German food and more will be provided by Ingolf’s Kneipe German Restaurant, Torch Restaurant & Bar and That Little Wine Bar and more. Again we offer a special Oktoberfest treat: Brezeln and Lebkuchenherzen (Gingerbread Hearts). This sweet is a must on any German fair. Now you can get it in Penang as well.

So, don’t forget to grab your Oktoberfest Souvenir Program for entrance in advance here at Malaysian-German Society, 250B Jln Air Itam (next to Suffolk House) at 04-2296853 or email to office@mgs-penang.com

Penang plans smoking kiosks

Smoking kiosks will be set up around the island once the Health Ministry approves the Penang government’s proposal to make the state smoke-free.

State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the designated smoking areas, by the roadside or in open air areas, complete with ashtrays and chairs, would be built to accommodate some 20 people.

He said, however, a survey would be conducted before the move was implemented in stages.

Phee said since it was difficult to get people to stop smoking, it would be easier to provide smoking areas for them.

“We respect their right to smoke even though it’s detrimental to health,” he said.

Phee said the smoking and non-smoking areas would be gazetted based on general consensus.

Phee said chances were that the state would emulate Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea to differentiate the smoking and non-smoking zones.

How to Get Rid of Insects

Got this from a chain email. Not sure how effective it is but is worth a try. Now with the rainy season back, our good friend the cockroach is back. I absolutely hate them and will try all methods to get rid of 'em...

To keep away ants, squeeze fresh lemon juice on where they'll be passing, and
also wipe the lemon slices on that surface.

Mosquitoes do not like spice. bury garlic under flowerbeds and clean dead leaves,

Cockroaches do not like fragrance. Cut small pieces of soap, put them in a bottle with water, and put the bottle in a cupboard where you want to keep out cockroaches. After several days, they will be all gone and your cupboard will even smell good.
cid:7.569439866@web30401.mail.mud.yahoo.com
You do not need to kill mosquitoes: dissolve Vitamin C and B2 in water, wipe the water on your skin, and the scent will drive the mosquitoes away.
Put up orange coloured curtains, or orange plastic wrap around a bulb. Mosquitoes are afraid of orange light, and they will be gone.
Hang up a bunch of spring onions, and use gauze to wrap up the green sections of the onions, and there will be no more mosquitoes.
Putting a pot of Lilies, Milans, Roses, or Evening Primroses in your room will work too.

To drive away cockroaches, you can put pieces of cucumber where you want to keep them away.

Thai Food, Fruits & Cultural Festival 2010

Date: 7th and 8th August 2010
Time: 10am to 11pm
Venue: Fort Cornwallis, Penang
FREE Admission

Coming this weekend – 7th & 8th August, the Penang State Government and Royal Thai Consulate-General of Penang will jointly organise a Thai Food, Fruits & Cultural Festival at Fort Cornwallis, Penang. During this time, the public will get an opportunity to experience the authentic culinary traditions and cuisines of Thailand and to witness as well, a few entertaining performances of Thai’s delicate and graceful traditional dances and also Thai’s well-known kick-boxing national sport – Muay Thai.

Thai food is internationally well known for its requisite aromatic and tasteful flavour characteristics. Ingredients such as herbs, chilli paste and fish sauce are often used and already synonymous with Thai’s cuisine. Be it spicy, sweet and/or sour, each cuisine has its own unique way of preparation and taste that will sure to tantalize one’s taste buds. There will be a great selection of fresh exotic juicy fruits from Thailand as well. So be sure to come and personally try out the many variety and selections of Thai’s freshly and deliciously prepared food to the public for these two days’ celebration.

Now besides food, there are some traditional performances lined up for the visitors as well. A group of 10 Thai traditional dancers garbed in beautiful embroidered costumes, will be demonstrating their graceful sophisticated dances to the audience. Now, it is definitely a privilege for the visitors to be able to personally watch the performance live.

Not forgetting too, the Muay Thai ‘fighters’ will also be showing their kick-boxing martial techniques on stage. Muay Thai was previously used as a practical fighting technique in actual warfare but as time gradually passes, it became a sport that’s performed in front of spectators for entertainment basis. Now, it has become a proud national sport of Thailand indeed.

So, do make time this weekend with friends and family to participate and experience this wonderful and interesting event. Admission is free and it’s from 10am to 11pm on both days. For more information on the performances time, kindly refer to the itinerary below.
